Filming in Provo: Downtown, Canyon, and Lake in One Day
Few cities give you this much range inside a twenty-minute radius. Downtown Provo has the brick storefronts and murals of Center Street, the historic Utah County Courthouse, and clean modern interiors at the Utah Valley Convention Center, a regular host for the conferences and trade shows our event video crew covers. A few minutes east, Rock Canyon and the mouth of Provo Canyon offer granite walls and river light that read as unmistakably Utah on screen.
Drive farther up the canyon and Bridal Veil Falls and Sundance add alpine scenery for brand and lifestyle work, while the Provo River Parkway and the Utah Lake shoreline cover open water and big-sky sunsets on the west side of town. We scout ahead, time exteriors for the light, and build the schedule so your team can sit for interviews in the office in the morning and still catch golden hour on location. Because we are based in Salt Lake City, coming back for pickups is a normal drive, not a travel day.
Permits & Filming Rules
The Rules That Shape a Provo Shoot
Most Provo business shoots happen on private property (your office, warehouse, clinic, or storefront), and those need nothing more than the owner's permission. Things change once a shoot moves into public space. Filming on streets, sidewalks, or in city parks can require a permit through Provo City, and Utah State Parks requires a special use permit for any paid photography or filming at Utah Lake State Park. Canyon locations may fall under the U.S. Forest Service or another land manager, each with its own process. The Utah Film Commission does not issue permits itself, but it points productions to the right office, and we take care of that coordination during pre-production.
One rule surprises a lot of people planning a Provo shoot: BYU does not allow commercial filming on campus. University policy bars people and businesses from filming on campus property for promotional, marketing, or commercial use, so a brand video cannot use BYU buildings or grounds as a backdrop. If you want that college-town energy on screen, we find it elsewhere, in downtown Provo or at a private venue with the right look, and we tell you about the restriction before it shows up in a storyboard.
Aerial footage takes planning here too. Provo Municipal Airport sits on the east shore of Utah Lake, and the state park is a no-fly zone for drones because of it. Controlled airspace is the airspace around an airport where drone pilots need FAA authorization before they fly, and parts of south and west Provo fall inside it. We check the airspace and request any authorization while planning, so every aerial shot in your storyboard is one we can legally capture on the day.
